Spey Casting Lessons & Packages

Learning Fly Fishing in Scotland

Interested to learn the time-honoured art of fishing the fly?

Headed by experienced casting instructor, Nicol Paton — who has two decades of teaching & coaching experience — The Scottish Fly Fishing Co. team delivers fly fishing lessons to people of all levels of experience and skill, from our home base on the majestic River Dee.

Whether you are visiting Scotland on vacation and want to try something authentically Scottish during your trip; or are a novice angler looking to try the sport for the first time; or are an experienced fly fisher looking to improve, we welcome you to come and join us on the river. We will help you develop technique, build knowledge and grow in confidence.

Our fly fishing / spey casting lessons usually take place on one of our fishing beats on the River Dee in Aberdeenshire — a world-famous location for Atlantic salmon and trout fishing.

Double Handed Spey Casting

In the eyes of a beginner, spey casting can look rather technical and difficult.

We understand this all too well. With the benefit of many years of fly fishing tuition and coaching experience, our first priority is to make you feel at ease and relaxed — it’s amazing how much of a difference this will make to your casting technique.

There are many different types of spey casts, and we’ll show you a variety of techniques. It is, however, very important that the technical fundamentals are covered before moving on through the different casts, and The Scottish Fly Fishing Co. team will ensure you’re guided through each aspect before we begin to introduce variations.

A salmon fisher typically performs their cast depending on the direction of the wind or which bank they are fishing from. The below spey casting techniques are taught by us. Typically two or three of these casts can be covered in a two-hour fly fishing lesson. If an angler specifically wants to focus on one cast or element within their cast to improve their skills, the lesson can be tailored to their specific requirements.

The Scottish Fly Fishing Co. can teach the following techniques:

  • Roll cast

  • Jump roll

  • Circle C

  • Single spey

  • Double spey

  • Snake roll

  • Overhead cast

  • Shooting line

You will also be taught how to present the line the way you want, depending on your set-up and time of year / conditions you are fishing in.

Block Booking Lessons

When it comes to learning spey casting and developing fly fishing technique, consistency is key. This is why we offer block bookings of spey casting lessons of 6 x two-hour sessions across six weeks. These lessons are blended between classroom time and practicing on the river.

Block lessons are aimed at the following levels:

  • Beginner

  • Intermediate

You will be issued with a syllabus that we will work through across the six sessions.

Spey casting lessons prices are available on request.
